Isobel Gamble leaves her home in Scotland as the young wife of her apothecary husband, Edward. She is a seamstress with the special talent of creating beautiful artwork with her needle and thread. Her husband is hoping for a new start in the New World and to break from his opium addiction. Edward abruptly departs on a ship as a medic, leaving Isobel alone to fend for herself in this strange country.
