Happy Monday, my friends! This weeks heart to heart talk is about channeling joy. I came across this quote and knew that this would be the perfect topic! “When joy is a habit, Love is a reflex.” How amazing is that? Sometimes I struggle in my own life with what makes me truly joyful. We all have those times where we get into a bit of a funk, aren’t ourselves, and maybe even feel a little depressed or more easily agitated. Even when those times in our lives are happening, being joyful is always a choice we have. Joy is simply a decision we have to make, to respond to life with gratefulness!
The first step to channeling joy, is to remember that the root of joy, is gratefulness. We often focus on what we don’t have that we want, or compare ourselves to others which leads to sadness and insecurity. All of our hearts long to be joyful, but so often that joy becomes buried by the weight of comparison, jealousy and fear. Something I do, is when I’m feeling frustrated, sad or overwhelmed, I try to stop and think of what I can be thankful for in that situation. Y’all, even when it seems like there isn’t, there is always something to be thankful for. When we feel grateful, joy radiates!
Here’s a stop and think question – For you, what does it mean to be joyful? I’ve asked myself this question, and I think for me, it isn’t the ratio of happiness to sadness. I feel most joyful when I feel like I have purpose, feel a deep sense of fulfillment, or feel truly loved. The crazy thing is (well not so crazy) is that we are able to get all of these things from God and his promises! I often lose my joy, because I focus on how the world can provide these things for me, when in reality if I just step back, I can see that God gives me a purpose, He is the only thing that can truly fulfill me, and the one that truly loves me every second. Do you ever feel yourself looking to the world to bring your joy?
Now back to the quote from the beginning of this post. “When joy is a habit, Love is a reflex.” When we channel joy in our lives, we are able to love others and ourselves so much more authentically and fiercely. Sometimes in the middle of the chaos, it is hard to keep our positivity up and our focus on being joyful. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t possibly expect for every day to be sunshine and rainbows. But, what I can do is focus with everything I have on being joyful every day. Even in the moments that feel dark. You can too!
I think the best way for us to channel joy in our lives, is to first be able to recognize that we need more joy! Being aware of something, leads to change and if we want change, we must first recognize that we need it.
Second, we need to be mindful of our actions. Think about how many times you choose the negative over the positive. I do it plenty. We live in a world that is full of negativity, but we have to be able to pull joy out of that, and try to look at the glass half full.
Third, remember this promise “The joy of the Lord is my strength” -Nehemiah 8:10. Find joy in God’s promises and his faithfulness in our lives. Joy is the one simple promise that God is in total control of our lives, and gives us the confidence that everything will be okay.
Let’s practice centering joy in our lives. Ready, set, GO!
